Pigiarvik means a ‘starting place’. The course introduces students to Inuinnaqtun pronunciation and grammar while enabling them to build basic skills including:
- asking and answering simple questions;
- using the singular, dual and plural properly; and
- beginner language for various situations in the home and workplace.
A dialogue in each lesson demonstrates to students how Inuinnaqtun is spoken in daily life and develops their listening skills. Students also receive instruction on reading and writing in roman orthography.
A special evening course offered in 2 sessions split between the Fall and Winter semester. Each session is a 2 week course consisting of 10 evening classes of 1.25 hours and one 3 hour Saturday class. This course has priority registration for teachers, health centre staff and other workers unable to attend day-time courses.
