All Arts Summit – determining the future of arts in Nunavut

IQALUIT, Nunavut (October 19, 2016) – The Department of Economic Development and Transportation held an All Arts Summit in Iqaluit from October 17-19, 2016, that will set the course for the future of all art sectors in Nunavut.

The summit offered key stakeholders the opportunity to voice their opinions, network and get informed. Participants discussed art sectors in Nunavut, the state of cultural industries, arts funding, Inuit arts administration, copyright, intellectual property and cultural appropriation, marketing and distribution, innovation, and Northern perspectives.

"The All Arts Summit brought the creative minds of the top people in the industry to one place to discuss what our new arts strategy should be." said Minister of Economic Development and Transportation Monica Ell-Kanayuk. "The new strategy will include all art sectors and ensure Nunavummiut are benefiting from their cultural and artistic work."

The stakeholders included artists from all disciplines and from across the territory, arts organizations, Inuit organizations and federal partners like the Canada Council for the Arts and the Department of Canadian Heritage. Guest speakers from Yukon, the Northwest Territories, Nunavik and Nunatsiavut also shared their perspectives.

A review of Sanaugait, A Strategy for Growth in Nunavut’s Arts and Crafts sector resulted in a recommendation for the department to develop a new comprehensive arts strategy that would include the arts in all media. Sanaugait has been the guiding strategy for arts and crafts since 2007. Based on the advice and recommendations from the All Arts Summit, the Department of Economic Development and Transportation will prepare a new strategy representing all the art sectors in the territory.
