Health Insurance - NIHB Coverage

The Non-Insured Health Benefits program offers insurance coverage in some of the following areas:

  • Medical Travel
  • Prescription Drugs
  • Medical Supplies and Equipment
  • Dental Services
  • Vision Services

All recognized Inuit Land Claim Beneficiaries are eligible for NIHB.

 

Medical Travel

Benefits: NIHB will pay the full cost of the $250 co-payment fee not covered by the Nunavut Health Care Card.

Prescription Drugs

Benefits: When approved, NIHB will pay the full cost of approved prescription drugs.

Making a Claim: The cost of your prescription is billed directly to NIHB.

 

Medical Supplies and Equipment

Benefits: When approved, NIHB will pay the full cost of prescribed medical supplies and equipment bought through approved service providers and vendors.

Making a Claim: The cost of your medical supplies is billed directly to NIHB.

 

Dental Services

Benefits: When approved, NIHB will pay the full cost of dental care that can include dental exams, cleanings, fluoride treatments, x-rays, root canals, and fillings and braces.

Talk to your dentist before being treated.

Making a Claim: The cost of dental care is billed directly to NIHB.

 

Vision Services

Benefits: NIHB will pay the cost of eye exams by a licensed eye doctor based on the NIHB Fee Grid.

NIHB will pay the cost of eyeglasses based on the NIHB Fee Grid.

If you are over the age of 19, you are eligible for one eye exam and one pair of glasses every 24 months.

If you are under the age of 19, you are eligible for one eye exam and one pair of glasses every 12 months.

Please note: if there is a major change in your prescription, you may be eligible for glasses sooner than the times listed above.

NIHB will not pay for contact lenses unless an eye doctor says your condition cannot be treated with eyeglasses.

Making a Claim: In Nunavut, the cost of eye exams and eyeglasses is billed to NIHB.

Outside of Nunavut, you may have to pay up front. You can also request that your eye doctor contact the (800) 661-0833 on the back of your health care card during business hours. Sometimes providers will invoice the Health Insurance Programs Office directly.

If you do have to pay up front, send an NIHB Personal Reimbursement Claim – Rankin Inlet along with your original receipts to the following address:
