Reporting to the Supervisor of Health Programs the Clerk Interpreter will provide professional and responsive confidential translation and facilitation support services between patients/clients and the health services team. This position impacts the public as it is the key entry point for services, patient complaints, referral and information services, and therefore requires a good knowledge of Inuktitut and English both written and spoken. The Clerk Interpreter will perform clerical support functions and may direct others in the delivery of such services with the administrative/clerical components in the office.

The Clerk Interpreter will deal with Inuktitut speaking clients, interpret and explain to patients and their family’s medical treatments that are to be carried out, medications and patient care instructions; including writing out instructions to patients as required in syllabics or diagrams. You will assist medical staff by preparing patient and assisting in examinations, and carry out routine preparatory activities. You will also receive, screen, prioritize and refer phone calls, faxes and emails, and ensure prompt and accurate forwarding. You will organize confidential records, type letters and reports, maintain filing systems and maintain accurate data base in the electronic health record.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of Inuktitut fluent written/oral, health programs and services and basic understanding of patient care and treatment. You should be proficient with computer software applications and different types of office equipment.

You will have a minimum of grade 10 education with one year of interpreting/translating experience. Equivalencies will be considered including prior experience working in a healthcare setting. WHMIS and Transportation of Dangerous Goods and Services certificate must be completed within the first year of employment.  CPR/First Aid is an asset, but training will be provided to the successful candidate.

Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official language is an asset.

Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatugangit is an asset.
