Unlicensed Lotteries – Be Aware

The Consumer Affairs division of the Department of Community and Government Services would like to remind Nunavummiut that it is unlawful to hold an unlicensed raffle in Nunavut. Having a licence protects both the consumer and the organization that is doing the lottery.

Before you buy a ticket on a raffle or prize draw, make sure you ask to see a copy of the valid licence and note the license number on the ticket. If a valid license and number cannot be provided, it is safe to assume that the raffle is unlicensed.

The Nunavut Lottery Act stipulates that only religious or charitable organizations are eligible to hold raffles. A private individual or business is not eligible to hold a lottery. If you are concerned that there may be fraud stemming from an unlicensed lottery, you should contact the RCMP.

Organizations interested in applying for lottery licenses can contact Consumer Affairs toll free at 866-223-8139 or by e-mail at nunavutlotteries@gov.nu.ca.
