Qilaut 2021 Songwriting Contest

The Department of Culture and Heritage in partnership with Qaggiavuut, is accepting submissions for Qilaut 2021, Nunavut's annual Inuktut songwriting contest. This year’s theme is Quviasuutiqarniq!

Qilaut celebrates the vibrant Inuktut music scene, inspires the creation of more original music and strengthens the use of Inuktut in all areas of our lives. The contest is a chance to be creative and express joy and celebration, especially during difficult times. Songs that make you want to smile, dance or laugh are encouraged.

Nunavummiut are invited to submit original Inuktut songs and for the first time the winners will be selected by you! This year, Nunavummiut will decide the winning songs through an online voting system. Ten winners will be announced on February 28 to receive a cash prize.

Entries will be accepted between Wednesday, February 10, until Wednesday, February 24, at midnight EST. Please email entries to The rules and entry forms can be found at 2021 Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq. All entries must include:
1. A digital copy of your song (.MP3 or .WAV).
2. Song title and lyrics.
3. Your name(s) and band name (if applicable).
4. A photo of the singer(s).
5. Your hamlet(s).
6. A copy of the contest entry form.

The top three winners will receive $5,000, $2,500, and $1,500 respectively, and the seven runners-up will receive $500 each.

Between February 25 and February 27, all the songs will be available online and voting will be open. Stay tuned for an announcement on how and when voting begins. Winners will be announced on February 28, 2021.
