Grand Opening of the Pond Inlet Community Harbour
Pond Inlet, Nunavut (July 26, 2022) – Yesterday, the Government of Canada along with the Government of Nunavut and the Hamlet of Pond Inlet, celebrated the grand opening of the Pond Inlet Community Harbour.
“This is a proud moment. This harbour will provide community members safer conditions for boating and will help create local and regional economic opportunities,” said David Akeeagok, Minister of Economic Development and Transportation. “We are pleased with the results of this partnership with the Government of Canada and are excited for future collaborations with the federal government to build and improve marine facilities in other communities.”
“The Department of Community and Government Services is proud to have played a role in the successful completion of the small craft harbour and improved resupply of facilities in Pond Inlet,” said David Joanasie, Minister for Community and Government Services. “Investment in strategic infrastructure such as this helps spur economic activity in communities and results in many benefits for residents. We look forward to continuing to work with the Government of Canada to build needed infrastructure across the territory.”
“Our government is proud to support the Pond Inlet Marine Infrastructure Project, which plays a key role in providing food, supplies and tourism opportunities for the Northern Qikiqtani region,” said Dominic LeBlanc, federal Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities. “This transformational asset will provide economic benefits and improve the overall safety of marine activities in the region.”
This project was jointly funded, with $30 million from the Government of Canada through the New Building Canada Fund – National Regional Projects, and $11 million from the Government of Nunavut.
