National Day for Truth and Reconciliation: Every Child Matters

The Department of Education recognizes the thousands of discovered unmarked graves at former residential schools across Canada as a dark chapter in history confronted by many Nunavummiut and Canadians.

The residential school system continues to have an enormous impact in Nunavut. On Friday, September 30, Nunavummiut are invited to wear orange to promote reconciliation, healing and to say loudly: Every Child Matters.

Schools, workplaces, and communities can continue to support truth and reconciliation in many ways:

  • Invite community members to share stories about residential school with students.
  • Organize events that celebrate Inuit language, culture, and resilience.
  • Watch the two-part video series called Every Child Matters, created by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission at https://nctr.ca/education/every-child-matters/
  • Show your support on social media using the hashtags: #ᓄᑕᕋᓕᒫᑦ_ᐱᒻᒪᕆᐅᔪᑦ, #EveryChildMatters, #TamarmikNutaraqIhumagiyauyukhat, #ChaqueEnfantCompte

The Department of Education thanks you for learning about and reflecting upon the residential school system more deeply. It is through this path that reconciliation and healing can happen.
