Arviat Youth Receives Prestigious Scholarship

IQALUIT, Nunavut (May 28, 2013) – Innosar John Issakiark, a Grade 12 student from John Arnalukjuak High School in Arviat, has been named a recipient of the 2013 TD Scholarship for Community Leadership, one of Canada’s top merit scholarships.

"Innosar is an artistic, talented young performer and volunteer in his community," said Minister of Education, Premier Eva Aariak. "His commitment and leadership in addressing issues such as bullying, suicide and the importance of staying in school through his use of theatre, the performing arts and digital media is worthy of recognition and we are proud of his achievements."

The TD Scholarship for Community Leadership was established in 1995. Each year up to 20 students in their final year of high school who have demonstrated leadership in improving their community are honored with this scholarship. Each award carries a value of up to $70,000 and includes up to $10,000 for tuition per year and $7,500 a year for living expenses.

This year's recipients have addressed a wide range of issues including the environment, bullying, gender equality and educational policy development. Issakiark is being recognized for his contributions to school and community initiatives such as the Arviat Leadership and Resiliency Program, the John Arnalukjuak High School Drama Club and the Arviat Film Society.

"We thank the Toronto Dominion Bank of Canada for recognizing Innosar as one of this year’s Top 20 TD Scholars and we extend our sincere congratulations to all of this year’s recipients," said Aariak.

The award will be officially presented at the TD Scholarship for Community Leadership National Awards Ceremony on Thursday, June 6, 2013, at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto.
