GN reviewing NIRB recommendations for Baffinland proposal

Iqaluit, Nunavut (May 13, 2022) – The Government of Nunavut (GN) is reviewing the Reconsideration Report and Recommendations regarding the Baffinland Phase 2 Development Proposal released today by the Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB). At this time, the focus of the GN’s review is to evaluate how these recommendations will impact Nunavummiut and Nunavut communities.

The GN supports responsible development of the territory’s natural resources and the role of NIRB in the territory’s environmental regulatory system. Additionally, the GN acknowledges the years of dedicated work that the board has committed to the Phase 2 proposal to-date.

A full review will be taken of the report to understand how NIRB reached its decision and how intervenor feedback obtained throughout the lengthy review process was considered in the final determination.

Further comments will be released once a full analysis is completed.
