Poverty Reduction

The Government of Nunavut’s Poverty Reduction division has two principal roles. The division provides administrative support to meet the requirements of the Collaboration for Poverty Reduction Act. This support includes serving on the secretariat to the Nunavut Roundtable for Poverty Reduction and assisting with the implementation of the Five Year Poverty Reduction Action Plan.

The division also is responsible for homelessness initiatives programs. These programs provide support to non-profit organizations operating emergency homeless shelters, and small financial contributions to community organizations undertaking initiatives to address homelessness.

Homelessness

The Poverty Reduction Division administers the Homelessness Initiatives program, which provides financial support for emergency shelter services in Nunavut. The Homelessness Action Plan will soon be completed.

 

Nunavut Roundtable for Poverty Reduction

The Roundtable was formally established through a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Nunavut and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. on October 24, 2012.

The Minister of Family Services is the Minister Responsible for Poverty Reduction and in this role serves as co-chair.

The Roundtable has prepared the poverty reduction action plan, The Makimaniq Plan 2: Our Shared Approach to Poverty Reduction, which builds on and extends Nunavut’s poverty reduction strategy - The Makimaniq Plan: A Shared Approach to Poverty Reduction. The Action Plan is in its final stages and will be made available to the public upon completion.

 

The Makimaniq Plan: A Shared Approach to Poverty Reduction

The Makimaniq Plan was prepared at the Poverty Summit in November 2011, following a year-long process of public engagement. The plan outlines priority areas for collaborative action to reduce poverty, with specific goals and objectives in each priority area.  These priority areas are referred to as long-term outcomes and include;

• Strengthened Support for Healing and Wellbeing

Minister’s Annual Report on Poverty Reduction

Under the Collaboration for Poverty Reduction Act, an annual report is produced detailing what the government is doing to reduce poverty. This annual report describes 65 different programs, policies and initiatives delivered by our departments and territorial corporations that contribute to reducing poverty in its many forms.
