Gender Equality Week September 20-26, 2020

September 20-26 is Gender Equality Week in Canada. This year’s theme is “Because of you”, which recognizes and celebrates the activists and advocates working to advance gender equality in their communities.

Gender equality implies that the interests, needs and priorities of both women and men and girls and boys are taken into consideration, and that they have freedom to develop their abilities and make choices without limitations set by stereotypes and prejudices about gender roles.

The Department of Family Services is currently reviewing proposals to move forward with projects through both the Women’s Initiatives Grants and the Men and Boys Initiatives Grants.

The Women’s Initiatives Grants create opportunities for individuals and communitybased agencies to access funding that will increase community capacity to assist women and girls in gaining skills in several areas such as leadership, economic selfsufficiency and self-reliance, and promote wellness and traditional knowledge.

The Department’s Men and Boys Initiatives Grants supports community-based programs that work with men and boys to promote health and healing. These initiatives help support men and boys in their personal recovery from violence and raise awareness of how they can prevent violence.

Engaging men and boys in awareness raising projects like these and ongoing work through Qulliit Nunavut Status of Women (QNSWC) will lay the foundation for greater action on gender equality and social change in Nunavut.
