September 16, 2023, marks the 61st anniversary of National Community Health Representative Day. In Nunavut, this is a day of appreciation for Community Health Representatives (CHRs) and their essential contributions to health services across the territory.

Nunavut CHRs provide various services including health education, health promotion, and disease prevention that aligns with the Inuit perspective of wellness, where the body, mind, spirit, and soul are connected.

CHRs promote healthy practices and awareness on various issues, including:

  • Nutrition.
  • Sexual health.
  • Maternal child health.
  • Mental health.
  • Oral health.
  • Environmental health.
  • Tobacco and cannabis harm reduction.
  • Substance use awareness.
  • Safety and injury prevention.
  • Other emerging health concerns in the communities.

CHRs enhance the health of Nunavummiut by developing, implementing, and monitoring evidence-based public health programs and initiatives. These programs integrate Inuit societal values and empower Nunavummiut to live healthy lives.

The Department of Health thanks all Nunavut CHRs for their endless support and assistance in delivering health programs in their communities.
