Inuit Employment Plans

The Department of Executive and Intergovernmental Affairs is the lead department for the implementation of the Inuit Employment Plan. This initiative is one of the highest priorities of the Government of Nunavut.

Vision: A government workforce is representative of the population it serves. In 2020, Nunavut is a place where, Inuit have been supported in their training and have taken leadership roles in government and in our communities, and there is a representative workforce in all sectors.

Many challenges facing Nunavut have not disappeared with the creation of a new territory, but exciting new possibilities have arisen. There is a sense in Nunavut that we can do things differently. There is the belief that we can build our government that is not only more representative but also closer and more in touch with our population.

Establishing a new government in a territory creates many new jobs. Spin-off developments in the private sector have also created many employment options. An increase in the number of jobs offers a tremendous opportunity to employ more Inuit, increase the standard of living in Nunavut, and improve a whole range of social conditions. It is critical that the government's workforce be representative of the population it serves. This is the most effective way to ensure that service to the public is responsive and culturally appropriate.

Nunavummiut can be assured that there is a plan to:

  • Recruit, select and hire Inuit to assume the leadership and administrative positions within the new public service.
  • Significantly increase the proportional representation of Inuit in government.
  • Create new and expanding opportunities for Inuit to gain employment in the Government of Nunavut.
  • Provide expanded training opportunities to prepare Inuit to assume these new positions.
  • Better prepare the children of Nunavut for jobs in the future.
  • Ensure that systemic barriers to Inuit employment are removed.
  • Continually develop Inuit and fill the more senior or professional jobs that have traditionally been filled by non-Inuit.
  • Through statistical analysis, "Towards a Representative Public Service", the Government of Nunavut can determine gaps in Inuit employment and work to fill them.
