English Grammar for Effective Writing

This course will consider the role of grammar at all stages of the writing process and how grammar changes in different contexts. Discuss word choice, sentence craft, and how to avoid the most common grammatical problems. Practice the grammatical rules by applying them to your own writing in exercises that will be critiqued by the instructor. Note: This course stresses the process of learning writing in a hands-on approach. Only selected key principles of grammar will be discussed and applied to your writing.

Course Outcomes: By the end of this course, students should be able to manage the following:

  • Identify and use parts of speech
  • Understand grammar as a concept that enables other concepts
  • Recognize sentence patterns and craft effective sentences
  • Avoid common errors in sentences
  • Learn how to plan and produce well-organized and cohesive writing
  • Define the purpose of a written piece
  • Adapt your writing voice and tone for different audiences and formats
  • Enrich your writing though vocabulary, figurative language and other style devices
  • Practise writing through in-class and take-home assignments
  • Learn how to revise your writing and edit others written work
