Foundational Writing and Editing Skills Program in English

The Foundational Writing and Editing Skills Program in English is comprised of three courses designed for employees seeking to develop their skills in the following areas listed below. 

Participants registering for this program will only need to fill out one application to be enrolled in all three courses, and a GN certificate of completion will be issued for participants that complete the entirety of this program.

For employees only interested in taking individual courses within the program, their application will be accepted and waitlisted as priority will be given to those registered for the whole program.    Waitlisted participants will be contacted closer to the course dates if there are any spots available.   

Course 1: ESL (English as a Second Language) Writer’s Workshop – February 1-2, 2022, 1-4:30 pm, CST.

This course addresses the specific concerns of writers for whom English is their second language. Key topics include the use of articles (a, an and the), verb tenses and idiomatic phrases, that is, those without literal meaning.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to do the following:

  • Apply the basics of sentence structure.
  • Use verb forms for tense, conditions, and expressions of possibility, likelihood, and recommendation.
  • Understand and use articles correctly.
  • Apply techniques for correct grammar and effective style to hands-on exercises and case studies.

Course 2: Grammar Refresher – February 8-9, 2022, 1-4:30 pm, CST. 

Participants will review the rules of grammar through exercise and case studies, as well as, through the revision of their own documents. The focus is on the practical application of grammar concept in recognizing and correcting common errors in sentence structure, punctuation and worder order (syntax). 

At the end of this course, participants will be able to do the following:

  • Develop a practical awareness of grammar rules and their relevance to the participants’ documents.
  • Recognize and eliminate common grammar errors.

Course 3: Excellence in Business Writing – February 16-17, 2022, 1-4:30 pm, CST. 

This course deals with the basics of business writing for emails, letters and short reports. Participants learn the best practices and standards associated with these business documents, along with considerations for special-case situations, such as handling negative news and complex subjects.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to do the following:

  • Apply a standard writing process to letters, email and short reports.
  • Use standard methods of audience analysis.
  • Use a checklist for the effective use of plain language.

Important Message:

  • All GN employees are welcome to register for this program (with limited spots available), but confirmed participants are expected to fully complete the program based on Central Standard Time (CST) from 1 – 4:30 pm.

Completed application forms must be downloaded, printed and signed by the employee and the employee’s supervisor, then emailed or faxed. All registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
