Introduction to the Nunavut Agreement

Beginning with the political and cultural movements that shaped the Nunavut Agreement, this course takes a deep dive into the origins, negotiation, contents, and implications of the most important document in recent Nunavut history. For participants of the Nunavut History and Governance course, the Nunavut agreement provides a broader, more general understanding of the roots and context of the Agreement for students moving on to the more detailed and complex content of the Nunavut Agreement course.

Learning Objectives: 

  • Understand the political and social status of Inuit in Canada before the 1970s
  • Be aware of the history of Indigenous/Canada relations
  • Be familiar with the key milestones in the development, negotiation, ratification, and implementation of the NA
  • Understand the nature and authority of the NA
  • Identify the key areas addressed in the 42 articles of the NA
  • Appreciate the implementation roles and mandates of the GN, Canada, Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI), regional Inuit organizations, and others
  • Describe how the GN implements its specific responsibilities under the NA
  • Understand the essential role of Inuit in the development of social and cultural policies
  • Review the major protocols developed by the GN to steer governance

Important Notes:

This Nunavut Agreement course is presented using an asynchronous delivery model. Participants can expect between 12-15 hours of self-study where they will work independently through the course content online. There will be 3-4 live sessions during which participants will have an opportunity to review expectations, meet with the course facilitators and other participants and hear from guest speakers.
