The Department of Justice – Corrections Division plays a leading role in the criminal justice system by protecting the community through client management and control. The Division manages all aspects of custody and supports clients in making positive changes in their behavior and attitudes.

Under the direction of a Correctional Supervisor these positions are responsible for maintaining the security and safety of clients within designated areas pursuant to established Department/Division/Facility policies, procedures, and standards. Security measures are primarily carried out within the Aqqigiarvik Correctional Healing Facility (ACHF) - previously known as the Baffin Correctional Center; however, these responsibilities often extend outside of the ACHF facilities due to client programming, court, medical, transfer, and other requirements which often leads clients within vicinity of the general public. Incumbents will monitor, analyze and assess human behavior, determine potential risk and apply appropriate mitigation procedures, methods and techniques. Incumbents must be able to interpret and ensure applicable safety, security and/or emergency procedural requirements and have effective interpersonal skills with the ability to deescalate aggressive behaviors.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through completion of a High school diploma (Grade 12) or equivalent (PASS, GED, etc.) plus a minimum of one (1) year experience in corrections or related social field and possession of up-to-date First Aid and CPR certifications. Incumbents must obtain Class 5 Driver’s license within their probationary period.

Effective communication skills both orally and in writing are essential for this position and candidates must have proficiency in computer applications including Microsoft Word, email, and file management.

These positions are subject to rotational shift work and employees may be rotated through designated posts within ACHF.      

Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.

The official languages of Nunavut are Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun, English and French. Fluency in more than one of these languages is an asset. Knowledge of the Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is an asset.
