Reporting to the Manager, Policy and Legislation, the Communications Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive communications and media relations strategy for the Department of Community and Government Services (CGS). This includes the need to effectively communicate with the public as well as more comprehensive collaboration and consultation with Inuit organizations, governments, community governments and the public. The effective implementation of a cohesive communications and media relations strategy will ensure that CGS communicates effectively with the public and provides useful and strategic public information about initiatives and ongoing program administration. The incumbent is also responsible for providing communications and public affairs products and services across the Government of Nunavut (GN) departments and agencies. This includes media relations, marketing, social media and website upkeep.
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a diploma in journalism, social sciences, political sciences or a related field plus a minimum of three (3) years of related experience. In addition, experience in developing communication strategies and media relations is required. Experience working within a cross-cultural environment is an asset.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun, English and French. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages is an asset. Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is an asset.
Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.
