Reporting to the Director, Intergovernmental Relations this Iqaluit position works closely with the Director and the Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM) of Intergovernmental Affairs in providing analysis and advice to the department on intergovernmental issues. The incumbent will be responsible for assisting with representing the government at intergovernmental forums and meetings, preparing the Nunavut leadership for full participation at various intergovernmental functions, and liaising with counterparts in the federal government, and other territorial and provincial governments is required.

Under the direction of the Director, and the ADM, the Advisor will write Cabinet submissions on items of intergovernmental significance, draft correspondence for signature by the Deputy Minister (DM) and the Premier, produce briefing materials for the Premier, the DM, the ADM, and the Director and support those positions in preparing for intergovernmental activities. The Advisor will examine submissions to Cabinet and its committees and may provide advice to committee members on issues associated with the submission. The project management responsibilities of this position include leading or taking part in interdepartmental working groups. In order to facilitate and support the decision-making of Cabinet, as well as the DM, ADM and Director, the Advisor will draw upon the information databases of political, social and economic indicators.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a degree from a recognized university in a related field such as International Studies, Political Science, or Public Administration. In addition, three (3) years related policy and/or intergovernmental experience is required. Advanced written and oral communication skills are required. Cross-cultural skills and experience will be an asset.

Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.

The official languages of Nunavut are Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun, English, and French. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages is an asset. Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land, and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is an asset
