Be aware of dangers to children near roads, trails and sliding hills

The Nunavut Coroner’s Office is advising Nunavummiut to be aware of dangers to children near roadways and ski-doo trails in our communities.

The Coroner’s Office recommends drivers pay close attention when operating vehicles in areas where children play nearby, including sliding hills, playgrounds and trails.

Since 2020, the Coroner’s Office has investigated deaths of four children involved in motor vehicle accidents while sliding and playing near roadways. These very unfortunate incidents continue to occur in Nunavut communities and are preventable tragedies.

Parents are encouraged to discuss the importance of staying a safe distance away from roadways, high-traffic trails, and outdoor safety generally with their children.

As community members, we all have a responsibility in ensuring our children remain safe while enjoying outdoor activities.
