Fire at Baffin Correctional Centre

Iqaluit, Nunavut (March 18, 2021) – The Department of Justice is currently managing an ongoing emergency at Baffin Correctional Centre. Today at approximately 3 p.m., a fire was discovered by staff at the facility. Inmates and staff were evacuated safely and there are no reported injuries. The fire has been extinguished and the RCMP are currently on site and have begun their investigation.

“Our thanks go out to the hard-working fire fighters at the City of Iqaluit, other first responders, and the Corrections staff who reacted quickly to ensure the safety and health of everyone at the facility,” said Minister of Justice, George Hickes.

The Department of Justice will be assessing the full extent of the damage in the upcoming days and work with stakeholders to identify options going forward. Updates will be provided as they become available.
