Northwest Territories/Nunavut Chamber of Mines

The chamber's goals are to promote the industry and the north to northerners, Canadians, and the world at large. It speaks out on industry opportunities, concerns and issues. It advises governments, investors, the media, educational institutions, and the public on industry positions and initiatives. Socio-Economic Monitoring Committees

The division of Minerals and Petroleum Resources co-ordinates the three regional Socio-Economic Monitoring Committees (SEMC) in the territory. These SEMCs were established to assess the health of our communities through a regional monitoring approach in collaboration with the Government of Canada, hamlets, industry, Regional Inuit Associations, and other interested parties.

Canada/Nunavut Geoscience Office

The mandate of the Canada-Nunavut Geoscience Office is to:

  • Supply geoscience information and expertise in Nunavut in support of responsible exploration and development of mineral and energy resources;
  • Build and maintain geoscience capacity and expertise in Nunavut;
  • Provide geoscience training opportunities, public outreach, and communicate an awareness of Earth Science to Nunavummiut.

Uranium Policy Statement

The Government of Nunavut regards mining as an important potential source of revenues to meet the needs of Nunavut’s growing population and also as a potential source of employment and associated skills development for Nunavummiut. In June 2012, the Government of Nunavut released a policy statement on uranium mining after a series of public uranium forums across the territory.
