Public Health Advisory
COVID-19 outbreak at Gjoa Haven Continuing Care Centre

The Department of Health is advising the public of a COVID-19 outbreak at the Gjoa Haven Continuing Care Centre.

Currently, all eight residents and one staff member have tested positive for the virus. Protocols are in place to ensure the health and safety of clients, staff, and the rest of the community. All Elders at the facility are in stable condition and are being closely monitored.

To avoid further spread of the virus and to protect client safety:

  • Visitation will be controlled to ensure safety while maintaining social supports for elders when necessary.
  • COVID-positive clients have been isolated.
  • Those needing to enter the facility will be screened for COVID-19.
  • Staff who feel ill are required to stay home until no longer symptomatic.
  • Enhanced cleaning measures are in effect.

Since the suspension of the Public Health Emergency in April, all health staff including continuing care centre staff have been required to continue wearing masks for the duration of their shifts.
