Local state of emergency declared in Pangnirtung

April 2, 2015 - CURRENT UPDATE: 1:30 p.m.

Iqaluit, NU

The local state of emergency in the Hamlet of Pangnirtung is still in effect as of April 2, 2015.

A fire at the power plant has resulted in a community-wide power outage. Fire crews have extinguished the fire.

Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) staff are working to restore partial power to the community using the emergency unit that is currently on site. QEC is also in the process of coordinating logistics to bring additional emergency generators to site to assist with full power restoration.

Warming stations have been established at the schools. Residents are advised to present themselves at the warming stations if they need assistance.

Residents with vulnerable health conditions are being assessed by health centre staff to determine if they need to be transported to Iqaluit to ensure their continued care.

Residents using portable heating equipment in their homes are reminded to properly ventilate their homes to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

Homeowners are advised to open their taps periodically to prevent pressure build-up in the lines or frozen pipes. Otherwise, please conserve water until further notice.

All community partners have responded quickly to provide any assistance required to keep the people of Pangnirtung safe. We will continue to manage this situation closely and respond as necessary.
