Local state of emergency declared in Pangnirtung

Pangnirtung remains under a local state of emergency after emergency back-up power was restored on Monday, April 6, 2015.

Four self-contained generator units (gensets) were successfully delivered to Pangnirtung; delivery was completed on April 21. A heavy-lift Sikorsky S-64F Skycrane transported all four generators to the community, with weather-monitoring assistance from a Pilatus PC12 airplane.

The Skycrane helicopter will be dismantled next week in preparation for transport to its next destination. An Antonov A-124-100 will arrive in Iqaluit on April 30 to load the helicopter and depart on the same day.

Qulliq Energy Corporation technicians are currently working to install the gensets in the community, which will be used as a mid-term power solution to replace the emergency back-up generators that have been providing power to the community since April 2. Brief power outages may be unavoidable during this time.

The local state of emergency will remain in place until the mid-term power solution has been fully implemented in the community. Please listen to the local community radio station for information and important updates.
