National Community Health Representative Day

September 16, 2021 marks the 59th anniversary of National Community Health Representative Day. In Nunavut, this is a day of appreciation for community healthcare providers and their essential contributions to health services across the territory.

Nunavut’s community health representatives provide various services including health education, health promotion, and disease prevention that aligns with the Inuit perspective of wellness, where the body, mind, spirit, and soul are connected.

Health representatives promote good health practices and awareness on various issues ranging from:

  • Nutrition.
  • Sexual infections.
  • Maternal child health.
  • Mental health.
  • Oral health.
  • Substance use awareness.
  • Safety and injury prevention.
  • Other emerging health concerns in the communities.

Community health representatives enhance the health of Nunavummiut by developing, implementing, and monitoring evidence-based public health programs and initiatives. These programs integrate Inuit societal values and empower Nunavummiut to live healthy lives.

The Government of Nunavut is proud of the ongoing work of the territory’s healthcare providers. Please take any opportunity to thank our community health representatives for all they have done during the COVID-19 pandemic, and for the ongoing contributions they make to healthcare across the territory.
