Byelection date set for Uqqummiut

IQALUIT, Nunavut (November 5, 2014) - The cabinet of the Government of Nunavut has set February 9, 2015 as the date for a byelection to be held in the territorial constituency of Uqqummiut.

The byelection is made necessary following the expulsion of the former member for Uqqummiut on October 24, 2014.

The Commissioner of Nunavut has confirmed the date by giving instructions through a proclamation pursuant to section 38 of the Nunavut Elections Act.

The Nunavut Elections Act requires that an election be held as soon as reasonably practicable, and not later than six months after a seat becomes vacant.

"A byelection in February will ensure that the people of Qikiqtarjuaq and Clyde River are represented at the winter 2015 sitting of the Legislative Assembly," said Premier Peter Taptuna.

Information for potential candidates will be made available through Elections Nunavut in the coming weeks.
