Byelection date set for Netsilik

IQALUIT, Nunavut (December 1, 2015) – Nunavut’s executive council has set February 8, 2016, as the date for a byelection in the territorial constituency of Netsilik.

The byelection is made necessary following the resignation of the former member for Netsilik on November 9, 2015.

The Commissioner of Nunavut has confirmed the date by giving instructions through a proclamation pursuant to section 38 of the Nunavut Elections Act.

The Nunavut Elections Act requires that an election be held as soon as reasonably practicable, and not later than six months after a seat becomes vacant. The issuance of the writ by the Chief Electoral Officer is set for January 4, 2016, and the return of the writ will be February 15, 2016.

“A byelection in February will ensure there is a new member of the legislative assembly to represent the people of Taloyoak and Kugaaruk in the winter 2016 sitting,” said Premier Peter Taptuna.

Information for potential candidates will be made available through Elections Nunavut in the coming weeks.
