Baker Lake to remain an unrestricted community for alcohol

Iqaluit, Nunavut (April 27, 2021) – In a plebiscite held on April 26, Baker Lake residents voted to continue the current unrestricted liquor system for alcohol.

182 people – 54 per cent of voters who turned out - were in favour of moving to an Alcohol Education Committee system where the committee decides who in the community may consume, possess or purchase liquor. Under the Liquor Act, at least 60 per cent of voters are needed to change the status of a community.

“At this time, there will be no changes to the liquor system in Baker Lake,” said Minister of Finance George Hickes. “I want to thank the residents for voting in the plebiscite.”

The consumption, possession, purchase, sale or transport of liquor will continue to be unrestricted in Baker Lake.

If residents of the community wish to revisit the matter in the future, a petition requesting a new plebiscite can be sent to the Minister of Finance.
