Effective Immediately: Increase to Baffin Island Caribou harvest

The Minister of Environment has accepted a decision recommended by the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board (NWMB) to increase the Total Allowable Harvest (TAH) of Baffin Island Caribou effective immediately for 2022-2023 harvest season.

For the harvest period of July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023, there will be an increase from 250 to 350 tags for Baffin Island Caribou. Of the 350 tags, up to 75 tags may be used to harvest female caribou.

There will also be an increase of 50 tags each following season of which up to 20% of the total TAH can be used to harvest female caribou. This will run for the next eight years or until new information becomes available that would require changes to the TAH.

The TAH was established to support the recovery of the Baffin Island Caribou population and is a critical piece in the co-management efforts to allow the herd to recover and provide harvesting opportunities for future generations.

Under the Nunavut Agreement, allocations of the TAH are the responsibility of the Qikiqtaaluk Wildlife Board (QWB). Hunters and Trappers Organizations (HTO) have the authority to allocate their share of the TAH and to regulate harvesting activities of their members.

If any hunters want to harvest Baffin Island Caribou, please contact your local HTO for more information on allocations.
