Full-time funding for District Education Authorities’ office managers

Last updated Tuesday, April 9, 2024

Iqaluit, Nunavut (April 9, 2024) – The Government of Nunavut’s Department of Education and the Coalition of Nunavut District Education Authorities (CNDEA) are pleased to announce that, beginning in July 2024, District Education Authorities (DEAs) will receive increased funding to enable DEAs to employ office managers on a full-time basis. Currently, the Department of Education provides part-time funding to DEA office managers.

DEA office managers are critical to the functioning of DEAs in communities and support their administrative and financial operations. This funding will increase their ability to provide important executive secretarial services to the DEAs to ensure that DEA members can focus on strategic thinking to bring the community’s voice to school programs, and not burdened with administrative duties.

“This additional funding will support DEAs in fulfilling their important role in communities and as part of our school system,” said Minister of Education Pamela Gross. “We look forward to seeing how this increased capacity can strengthen the role of each of our valued DEA members. This funding demonstrates the Government of Nunavut’s commitment to the Katujjjluta mandate, and to reinvesting in education.”

“The Coalition of Nunavut DEAs is supportive of this initiative,” said CNDEA chairperson Jedidah Merkosak. “The funding to employ DEA office managers on a full-time basis helps the district education authorities across Nunavut to address the high turnover rate of their office manager positions. The stability of the DEA’s workforce is important and will allow DEAs to better meet their obligations and responsibilities identified under the current Nunavut Education Act.”
