GN and QIA sign MOU to develop education resources
IQALUIT, Nunavut (June 4, 2021) – Today, the Department of Education and the Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to invest in the collaborative creation of educational resources grounded in Inuit culture and language. This MOU will help to strengthen cultural identity and Inuktut language skills for preschool-aged children, K-12 students, and adult learners in Nunavut.
“The Department of Education is committed to working with the QIA to ensure that educational programs and resources promote Inuit language and culture for our students and communities,” said Minister of Education David Joanasie. “By working together, we can ensure that Inuit language, identity and culture continue to thrive in ways that are relevant and engaging to children and youth.”
This MOU strengthens the existing relationship between the Department of Education and QIA in the coordination of educational resource development projects of shared interest. The MOU affirms the Department’s mandates and specific responsibilities with respect to the development, production, and distribution of educational resources.
“This agreement represents a significant step in QIA’s continued efforts to revitalize Inuit culture throughout our region,” said QIA President P.J. Akeeagok. “We look forward to working together with the Department of Education to ensure a bright future for Inuit children.”
