GN extends Iqaluit’s State of Emergency

Iqaluit, Nunavut (October 28, 2021) – Government of Nunavut’s (GN) Minister of Community and Government Services Jeannie Ehaloak, today extended the State of Emergency in Iqaluit until November 9, 2021. This extension will allow the GN to continue to support the city’s response to water treatment and help address community needs.

To date, the GN has supported the City of Iqaluit by:

  • Purchasing, transporting and distributing bottled water to address the immediate potable water needs of Iqaluit residents.
  • Deploying the GN’s mobile water treatment plant.
  • Transporting potable water pumps and storage tanks.
  • Providing technical assessments and design work to restore City’s water distribution services.
  • Reviewing treatment system bypass and remediation options.
  • Requesting assistance from the federal government for an additional mobile water plant. Two portable water treatment plants will be situated near Lake Geraldine and will treat and test water before distribution. Bottled water will continue to be supplied and distributed for residents on the utilidor system.

The GN continues to work with the Government of Canada and the City of Iqaluit to mobilize the Canadian Armed Force’s water treatment equipment and distribution operations in Iqaluit.

This state of emergency order does not affect the ongoing Public Health Emergency declared to address the COVID-19 pandemic.
