Iqaluit Deep Sea Port Project milestone achieved

Iqaluit, Nunavut (November 14, 2022) - On September 9, 2022, the Department of Community and Government Services confirmed substantial completion of the Iqaluit Deep Sea Port Project. The operation of this important piece of infrastructure has now been formally turned over to the Department of Economic Development and Transportation.

“Safe and efficient marine transportation is critical for the North’s economic and social development – and that is exactly what the Iqaluit Deep Sea Port will deliver,” said the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, federal Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities. “Working in partnership with the Government of Nunavut and all Nunavummiut, we will continue growing the Territory’s economy and increasing the resiliency of communities in Canada’s North.”

“With today’s announcement, we have added a key piece of infrastructure to the territory,” said Minister of Community and Government Services David Joanasie. “Completion of this project will improve the safety and efficiency of shipping and receiving dry cargo and goods in the region and territory for years to come.”

“I’d like to thank our colleagues at the Department of Community and Government Services for their work to move the port project through this important milestone,” said Minister of Economic Development and Transportation David Akeeagok.

“My department continues to move forward on developing all the necessary facility operation plans so that this significant infrastructure can be used for the benefit of all Iqalummiut.” Construction of the Iqaluit Deep Sea Port was initiated in July 2018 as part of the Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component – National and Regional Projects program. Completion of the port is a major step forward for economic development in Iqaluit and throughout Nunavut.

The facility is expected to be fully operational for the 2023 community resupply season. The Government of Nunavut thanks the Government of Canada for their partnership and ongoing commitment to the development of critical northern infrastructure improvements.
