National Immunization Awareness Week

April 21 to April 28 is National Immunization Awareness week in Canada. Each year, this week acknowledges that vaccines have saved millions of lives. As Canada and Nunavut continue to live with COVID-19, it is more important than ever to recognize that vaccines are safe, effective and the best protection against severe disease.

All Nunavummiut five years old and older are encouraged to get the COVID-19 vaccine. Depending on age and other factors, the number of COVID-19 vaccines and booster doses you are eligible for may vary.

  • For children aged 5 to 11, the vaccine series includes two doses given a minimum of eight weeks apart. For immunocompromised children aged 5 to 11, the vaccine series involves three doses.
  • For individuals aged 12 to 49 years, the vaccine series includes two doses given a minimum of eight weeks apart, plus one booster dose. For immunocompromised individuals 12 to 49 years old, the vaccine series involves three doses plus one booster dose.
  • For individuals 50 years and older who have received two doses of the vaccine plus one booster dose 4.5 months or more ago, a second booster dose is now being offered.

Currently, vaccines are available across the territory. Call your local health centre to make an appointment.

While the world has focused on COVID-19, don’t forget to make sure all your vaccinations are up to date. Talk to your health centre to ensure you are fully protected against vaccine-preventable diseases.
