Nunavut records ninth COVID-19 death

Iqaluit, Nunavut (August 29, 2022) – The Department of Health has confirmed a death that occurred on August 26 was caused by COVID-19 infection. To date, Nunavut has had nine COVID-19 deaths attributed to the territory.

“This is an unfortunate reminder that COVID-19 continues to be a risk in our communities and our condolences go out to the family,” said Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Michael Patterson. “COVID-19 is not gone, and we predict that Nunavut can expect a new wave of infections this winter. I encourage everyone to get vaccinated. Vaccination is our best defense against severe COVID-19 infection, hospitalization and death.”

“I urge all my fellow Nunavummiut to get vaccinated. Help protect our communities from COVID-19 this winter,” said Minister of Health John Main. “We can all protect the health of others by getting vaccinated, staying home when sick, wearing a mask, washing hands frequently and using at home rapid tests.”

As of August 26, all Nunavummiut older than six months are eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine and booster shots are available to anyone older than five. Contact the
COVID-19 hotline at 1-888-975-8601 or go to COVID-19 Vaccination | Government of Nunavut to determine if you are up to date on your vaccinations. Vaccine appointments can be made by calling your local health centre or public health unit.

To protect the privacy of the family, no additional information will be provided about the person who died.
