NEWS RELEASE

Nunavut Suicide Prevention Strategy partners release Resiliency Within

IQALUIT, Nunavut (March 7, 2016) – The Government of Nunavut (GN), Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI), the Royal Canadian Mounted Police “V Division” (RCMP) and Isaksimagit Inuusirmi Katujjiqatigiit Embrace Life Council (ELC) today jointly released Resiliency Within, the one-year Nunavut Suicide Prevention Strategy Action Plan.

Resiliency Within, which incorporates jury recommendations from the 2015 coroner’s inquest, outlines a number of commitments for public and community engagement, as well as training, programs and support provided during the 2016-17 fiscal year. Partners will work to engage communities and stakeholders in the development of a long-term, participatory action plan.

“We are supportive of Nunavummiut who run programs to develop and foster wellness within individuals and our communities. As a one-year plan, Resiliency Within allows important work to happen immediately and, at the same time, for the partners to engage with stakeholders for the development of a longer-term plan based on supporting these local initiatives and organizations,” said Premier Peter Taptuna.

“Survival was an essential skill taught among Inuit for thousands of years. It was our way of thinking, our way of life. We must reclaim that mindset, to thrive and be resilient, and to restore our survival attitude,” said NTI Vice-President James Eetoolook.

“The RCMP recognizes that suicide prevention is a key priority and looks forward to working with our partners and stakeholders in addressing this issue,” said Inspector Dean Warr, RCMP.

"The Embrace Life Council looks forward to working with our partners and stakeholders including youth committees, non-governmental and faith organizations across the territory to ensure positive implementation of the action plan," said David Lawson, President of Embrace Life Council.
