UPDATE: Local state of emergency in Pangnirtung
April 6, 2015 - CURRENT UPDATE: 3 p.m.

The Hamlet of Pangnirtung declared a local state of emergency on April 2, 2015 due to a fire at the power plant that resulted in community-wide power outages.
Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) restored power across the community on Monday, April 6 at 12:50 a.m.
Generators have been installed throughout the community. Power was fully restored on the main feeder lines to homes and businesses early Monday morning. Some buildings, such as the community health centre and both schools, will remain on back-up generators to relieve power loads on the main feeder lines. These measures will be used to address immediate power demands until a more permanent, mid-term solution can be implemented.
QEC technicians are monitoring power capacity as services are brought online. There may be periodic outages as technicians stabilize the system. Residents are asked to continue to conserve power.
The warming centre at the high school will remain open until 5 p.m. tonight. The community emergency command centre will move to the hamlet office later today.
Community radio services have been restored. Residents are advised to listen to the community radio station for information updates.
Residents are reminded to check all perishable foods before consuming to ensure they are safe to eat.
Anyone requiring medical care or assistance are advised to present themselves at the community health centre or call 867-473-8977.
Government of Nunavut (GN) offices in Pangnirtung will be closed until further notice, as network services are offline until power services are stabilized. Please listen to the local community radio station for office closure information.
The local state of emergency will remain in effect until a mid-term solution is in place.
