Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq 2023

Iqaluit, Nunavut (March 31, 2023) – Get ready for Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq 2023, the annual celebration of Inuktut and Inuit culture in Nunavut, happening in April!

This year's theme is 'Qulliq', the traditional Inuit oil lamp that has been used for thousands of years. The qulliq enabled our ancestors to survive in harsh conditions and reflects the warmth of Inuit culture and community.

“During Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq and beyond, I urge Nunavummiut to practice Inuktut everyday,” said Minister of Culture and Heritage, Pamela Gross.

“Speak with your families and friends and pass on your language skills to your children, friends and colleagues. Each time we use Inuktut, we help to keep our language and culture strong. The survival or our language is central to our survival as Inuit.”

Throughout the event, the Department of Culture and Heritage, in partnership with other Government of Nunavut departments, will be promoting a variety of activities and resources to celebrate Inuktut.

Check our Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq page for updates because we’re planning activities for the celebration of Inuktut and Inuit culture. Let's shine a light on the beauty and importance of Inuktut!
