Teacher - term position
This position is included in the Nunavut Teachers Association.
Type of Employment: Term to June 2019
Nunavut students need dedicated, dynamic and caring teachers. The territory has one of Canada’s youngest and fastest growing populations. The Government of Nunavut is looking for teachers for full-time term positions in schools in the Qikiqtani region.
Normally all applicants must have a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) and be eligible for a Nunavut Professional Teaching Certificate; however, the Department is temporarily exempting this requirement in the following communities only:
- Arctic Bay
- Cape Dorset
- Clyde River
Required qualifications for high school positions include: subject knowledge normally gained through a Bachelor’s degree, and experience relevant to the assignment.
Required qualifications for elementary and middle school positions include: a Grade 12 diploma and three years of experience working with school-aged children.
All candidates will ideally have knowledge of how students learn; knowledge of subject matter content; experience with lesson planning; and experience teaching in K-12, ESL, or adult learning environments.
The Department of Education is committed to the promotion of Inuktut and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (Inuit Societal Values), improving student literacy, and inclusive education. Knowledge of these will be considered an asset.
Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.
All applicants must be eligible to work in Canada at the time of application.
Applicants must submit a Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) dated no more than six months prior to the position start date. Applicants will be required to provide an acceptable CRC and VSC before a written offer will be made.
The Government of Nunavut pays for relocation from any point in Canada as outlined in the Nunavut Teachers’ Association Collective Agreement. Subsidized staff housing may be available, although sharing of accommodations will be required.
The Government of Nunavut is committed to a more representative workforce to best serve the needs of Nunavummiut. Priority will be given to Nunavut Inuit.
