General Identification Card Application

The Government of Nunavut strongly suggests Nunavummiut to get a General Identification Card. This card provides government-issued identification for individuals to use for day-to-day business transactions. A General Identification Card can be used as a travel document needed for air travel and medical travel. It is free to apply for a General Identification Card.

What do I need to get a General Identification Card?

To get a General Identification Card, you must:

  • be a resident of Nunavut
  • Must be 12 years of age
  • bring two pieces of government-issued identification, and at least one must show your date of birth. Examples of government-issued identification are Birth Certificate, Nunavut ID Age Card, Citizenship Certificate, Passport, Certificate of Naturalization, Certificate of Native Status, Immigration authorization, Marriage Certificate, Health Care Insurance Card, Credit Cards and Nunavut Government ID. 

Individuals under 18 will require a signature from a parent or guardian. The parent or guardian must show two pieces of government-issued Identification.

Where can I get a General Identification Card?

You can apply for a General Identification Card at a Motor Vehicles Division issuing office, in the following communities

  • Iqaluit
  • Rankin Inlet
  • Cambridge Bay 
  • Gjoa Haven 

In all other communities, you can apply for a General Identification Card at the local Municipal Liaison Office (MLO) or Government Liaison Office (GLO).

Fee

It is free to apply for a General Identification Card.

Validity 

A General Identification Card is valid for 5 years, after which must be renewed.
